Starbucks bids to be the next cafe in Earlsfield

In a move sure to be even more controversial than the opening of the new Tesco on Garratt Lane, GE friend Charlie has spied an application for what was the 'Refuel' site next to the station. It's from Starbucks.

There isn't much detail in the application as it seems the main change would be to remove the sheds at the back of the property and extend the existing building. The proposed floor plans are below (pavement to the right of the drawing).

The site will already be zoned for a cafe and from my quick read the extension seems fairly straightforward, so it will be difficult for the council to refuse on planning grounds. I suspect the residents of Earlsfield will have rather more to say on the matter.

If you want to comment on the application, you can do so online. We're lucky in Earlsfield that the high street supports so many independent cafes. If you think so too, make sure to keep giving them your custom, no matter the competition.

Read the GE reviews of Earlsfield's coffee offerings (part one) (part two).

  1. Thank you for posting GE. There is noting that can be done to stop Starbucks taking occupation but it is a real disappointment. I was hoping for somewhere that you can buy a healthy takeaway lunch - I haven't found a decent sandwich in Earlsfield yet!

  2. I heard from one of the builders that it was to be a Waitrose - much more welcome than a Starbucks.

    1. I think that the builder may have been pulling your leg. Waitrose have a Little Waitrose format but I don't think that there is a Mirco Waitrose yet :-)

  3. Ha good one, but aren't two shops up for grabs - the Brazilian and the former newsagent, or is that whole area just for Starbucks ? Must say, most disappointed now ....

    1. I think that we are talking about 2 different sites. Starbucks are going in directly outside the station. The double unit is under the bridge next to The Earlsfield therefore the builders could be right about Waitrose being the new tenant...time will tell!

    2. ...and I just checked the plans - the retail area in 3,000 sq ft which is big enough for a little Waitrose...

  4. Well that sounds more promising, I'll be interested to see what happens ...

  5. It's definitely not going to be a little waitrose unfortunately. It is too small for them, they have looked at it though. They also looked at the Tesco's but again too small.

  6. Do we really need another mini supermarket in the area? A nice deli/cafe would be better and perfect for where the brasilian/premier foods was, there are plenty of cafes further up towards tooting but nothing past the station going towards wandsworth.

  7. I took a look at the plans for those units, and I think it is going to be flats, although there may also be a small commercial outlet too, so I think definitely not Starbucks (which I am pleased about), but sadly no Waitrose either. A cafĂ© that does a good reasonably priced breakfast would be great, or even an upmarket butchers like “Cleavers” on Old York Rd would also be very welcome. We certainly do not need anymore Estate Agents or hairdressers on that stretch, so hopefully that will not happen.
